#16: I'm So Gay - by Erin River Sunday
I was introduced to Maggie Rogers by my (triple Gemini) sister several years ago. We were sitting in her living room watching music videos on YouTube- a favorite pastime of any Mercurial person, as I’ve come to learn, when she put on “Fallingwater.”
My sexual awakening had come about a decade before, but this would’ve been a better story.
I was enamored. I loved the way she moved, the way her voice sounded, and the power of her lyrics. From her long hair to the flowing red kaftan and mountains of sand, the visuals were stunning. It’s still one of my favorite music videos of all time, and in that moment she became one of my favorite artists…and yes, a huge crush.
To my knowledge, Maggie Rogers is straight. But with her recently chopped hair, #freethenipple clothing choices, and, ahem, popularity amongst the LGBTQ+ community…she’s at minimum queer adjacent. Right? Right??
Maggie’s sexuality is certainly none of my business (a girl can dream, though) but her birth chart, on the other hand? Blessedly fair game.
If you, too, have been fantasizing about riding horses with Maggie (and Maggie’s bandana) read on for an astrological hot take on why she does what she does so well…according to the stars.
It’s truly a miracle that I had not tried to deep dive Maggie’s birth chart until now.
I knew she was a Taurus, but I made the dangerous assumption that because she wasn’t as famous as other people, that I either wouldn’t be able to find a birth time at all…or that if I did find something online, it wouldn’t be correct.
On that note, to all you baby astrologers out there…please for the love of Goddess don’t just Google celebrities names/birth charts and trust that the information is accurate.
There are a few different birth times floating around for lots of celebrities and I believe it’s a disservice to the aStRoLoGiCaL cOmMuNiTy to work with information that might turn out to be incorrect.
Lucky for us Maggie Rogers lovers, though, the angel herself gifted us with the ultimate gift in 2019:
I haven’t been on Twitter since my BuzzFeed days, but when I innocently began my quest for Maggie’s birth time and came across this Tweet…I literally squealed.
With that pertinent information secured, I hungrily acquired the rest of her birth data and took in her chart, in all its glory, for the first time.
The first thing I noticed about Maggie Rogers’ birth chart, as is often the first thing I notice, was her Rising Sign. Of course she’s a Gemini Rising!
If you’re new around here and need a little refresher, the Rising Sign (or Ascendant) is arguably the most important point in a person’s birth chart.
The Rising Sign, and its ruling planet and house, represents our fundamental energetics, or how we materialize in the 3D. It’s the first impression we make on others, and perhaps ironically, can be difficult for us to see in ourselves.
Because Maggie is a Gemini Rising, her birth chart is ruled by Mercury, the planet of communication. Strong Gemini/Virgo placements (both ruled by Mercury) are commonplace for writers and musicians that write their own lyrics.
To take it a bit deeper, Maggie’s (Anaretic Degree) Mercury is in Aries in the eleventh house of her birth chart.
Mercury in Aries = Sexual, Brash, Unapologetic, Visceral, Commanding, LOUD
Mercury in the Eleventh House = Community-Oriented, Progressive, Surprising, Freedom-Seeking, Logical
I could analyze any number of her songs within the context of this placement alone, but in the interest of time, I’ll simply provide lyrics from the song “Horses” that I shared above:
Watch you go
Cross the street like a dream out my window
Sucking nicotine down my throat
Thinking of you giving head
Hello! Every single one of these lines could be a a case study on the Mercury in Aries in the eleventh house placement. And ok, I’ll share the “Want Want” music video, too…which I think you’ll find self explanatory.
The next thing I found particularly interesting about Maggie’s chart was her Midheaven in Aquarius. If you, too, have a Midheaven in Aquarius, it’s a safe bet that you’re going to have some very sudden and surprising career moments throughout your life, likely brought about by your participation in certain communities.
Maggie’s Midheaven is also in the ninth house, that relates, among other things, to higher education.
CUE PHARRELL.
If you’re a Maggie Rogers fan, or becoming one in this very moment ;-) you’ll know that her career exploded when she was in undergrad at NYU and none other than Pharrell Williams paid a visit to one of her classes. He was there to critique homework assignments, unbeknownst to the students until it was happening (no biggie).
He offered her other classmates plenty of valuable feedback, but with her…it was different.
I’ve watched this clip more times than I’d like to admit over the years, but both of their expressions are priceless- particularly his. I think my favorite moment is minute 1:31, when Maggie dared to peek over at him, they make eye contact, and she laughs a little as if to register his bewildered eyes.
This is a pinnacle moment for her Midheaven in Aquarius placement. The video, of course, quickly went viral…and her first huge record deal soon followed.
The final thing I’ll discuss about Maggie’s birth chart (for now, muahaha) is her sixth/twelfth house axis.
The sixth house is about our daily, mundane lives. Think: doing the dishes, dropping the kids at soccer practice, and, hopefully, the occasional bubble bath. It’s about how we “keep the wheels on the bus,” so to speak.
A build-up of planets in this house, like Maggie, ensures that you’re a hard worker. You’re likely frustrated by people you would deem “lazy” and appreciate regimented schedules and routines.
The opposite house, then, is about the opposite! The twelfth house is where we go to escape. It’s home to our addictions (while the sixth house is about purity of health) and any other way we might get carried away- often in seclusion. It’s also an extremely psychic place where if we learn to trust our intuition, we have the power to tap into the collective unconscious.
Because Maggie’s birth chart features personal planets in both the sixth and twelfth houses, she juggles (and on the best of days, balances) the spiritual, creative realm with practical reality. The ability to not just get lost in the vibes…but also to get to the studio and do the work is what separates a singer with a one hit wonder from a dedicated artist with staying power.
I have a bunch of planets in the sixth and twelfth houses of my own birth chart as well, and while my singing would bring people to tears for a very different reason than Maggie’s does…my spiritual practices are the embodiment of the same birth chart signature.
If you’re a creative of any kind and struggling to ground your talents into your daily life, check out what’s happening in your own sixth house. Artistic and spiritual gifts are wonderful, but if you want to make them your “living” then daily structure will be required.
I could talk about every single placement in Maggie Rogers’ birth chart…but I will decidedly stop myself here and leave you with a couple comments from the woman herself:
Maggie, if you ever desire a personal astrologer, I’m your girl. And if you ever desire women as more than just your BFFs…I am also, YOUR GIRL.
Through time and space,
Erin River Sunday
