23. A Clockwork Orange (1971)
#23. A Clockwork Orange (1971)
Coming in at number 23 on the list of my 100 Favorite Films of All Time is the 1971 dystopian crime film, A Clockwork Orange. A Clockwork Orange was directed by Stanley Kubrick and stars Malcolm McDowell with supporting performances from Patrick Magee, Michael Bates, Warren Clarke, and John Clive.
A Clockwork Orange is the third of three Kubrick films to make my Top 100 list and it’s my favorite by a mile. I enjoy The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut, but A Clockwork Orange is on another level. The violence and vulgarity showcased is disturbing initially, but as you see Alex change, you almost feel bad for what he’s going through despite the fact that he has raped and crippled people in the past. The visuals are quite pleasing to see like when Alex and his goons walk through the night and you faintly see their silhouette.
Malcolm McDowells performance is my third favorite of anyone in a Kubrick film behind Jack Nicholson in The Shining and Vincent D’Onofrio in Full Metal Jacket. All three are phenomenal performances, but with McDowell as Alex DeLarge, he is able to attach an aura of sympathy to a character who truly is a monster. Just a pure chefs kiss to Stanley Kubrick.
