a prayer for Freedom - by Fatimah Asghar

This morning I lit a candle for the being of freedom. For this beautiful entity, which I’m so early in the process of getting to know, this beautiful beacon of hope so many of us hold close, that so many of us strive for.

A few days ago, when I was in prayer, I was struck with the message that Freedom—the spirit of Freedom—is calling to us now. It needs us, just as much as we need it. This was a huge realization for me, that our paths are connected like this, and how much Freedom needs us, on spiritual level, to help contribute to its journey.

I am not qualified to speak for it, but from my sense, Freedom has such a long journey full of so much heartbreak. As it’s shown its own light, it’s been consistently shunned by corrupted ideas of power, by abuse, by shame. And yet, Freedom is a being that continues despite the way it’s been policed or projected upon, despite the ways that people call for it and then when it arrives they turn away in fear, shame, disgust or lack of courage.

What a way to treat a blessing. But we are human, and sometimes extremely grateful or self-centered. It is our work to treat our blessings and the beings around us better.

This morning, when I lit a candle, I offered the being of Freedom a prayer. I anointed the candle with protection oil, and prayed that Freedom be protected and be able to see clearly. Then I continued, with a simple prayer:

Oh, Freedom, may you burn brightly. May you know how much you are loved, how much you are needed. May anything that blocks your crown dissolve. May you always move with your intuition, even when others don’t understand it. May you speak clearly, and may your message be heard. May you lead with your heart, and may we be inspired by your heart. May you never dull your shine. May you walk in your true radiance. May you move with creative energy and power. May you know how much you belong, to this world, and all the worlds you come from.

Freedom, I know you’ve been visiting Palestine, Sudan, the Congo, Kashmir, Haiti, Tigray, Afghanistan, Balochistan, Turtle Island and so many other places.  Thank you for your presence, thank you for being here. I ask that you bless the people that you visit, that you bring them true liberation.

For myself, I pray that Freedom, if you come to visit me, may I hold you with open arms, may I let go of my own fear, may I know you are not mine alone, but everyone’s. May I let your radiance dissolve the blocks within me, and may I be inspired by your walk to find the freedom in myself.

Freedom needs us, y’all. If you have a moment, and can spare a prayer for it, for its every-growing strength, please do. If you can lay an offering for Freedom, or light a candle.

Thank you, Freedom, for being on this Earth with us, for what you teach. I am ever grateful.
