About - Bonnie Kristian

I’m a journalist and author. You may know me from my years writing and editing at The Week, but now I’m the editorial director of ideas and books at Christianity Today and a fellow at Defense Priorities. While freelance, I was writing regularly at Reason and The Daily Beast, and I’ve been widely published at outlets including The New York Times, USA Today, CNN, NBC, and Politico.

My first book was A Flexible Faith: Rethinking What It Means to Follow Jesus Today (FaithWords, 2018). My second book is Untrustworthy: The Knowledge Crisis Breaking Our Brains, Polluting Our Politics, and Corrupting Christian Community (Brazos Press, 2022). It's about how we increasingly don’t know what is true, what is knowable, or who we can trust—how our whole information environment is chaotic and overwhelming, and what we can do about it.

I have a master’s in Christian thought from Bethel Seminary, and I live in Pittsburgh with my husband, three kids, and guinea pigs.

In its first year and a half, this Substack focused on my research, writing, and publication process for Untrustworthy. Now that it’s out in the world—or at least until I have another book contract and a new research process to share—here’s what you can expect weekly updates (currently on Wednesdays) with five items per post:

  • A brief take I haven’t written elsewhere

  • What I’m reading this week (maybe a book, maybe an article)

  • Something I recommend (a recipe, show, Substack, whatever)

  • A roundup of my recent work

  • Miscellaneous item of my choice
