About - Core Toons

So glad you’re here! Comics are fun to make and fun to read, so while we’re all here having fun … why not build those skills too?
For creators, short comics can be a great way for us to share ideas that aren't big enough for a whole book, experiment with new characters, and practice visual storytelling techniques. Practice makes progress!
AND we believe short comics are also a great way for kids to stretch their thinking muscles- to assimilate information through the combination of art and text, plus having a nudge to think beyond what is on the page.
Core Toons is a project we designed to share more of our work with readers while we are between books, (which take a long, long, lonnnnnnng time to make). And we added a little learning component, sort of like a goody bag you get at the end of a birthday party, so that everyone walks away with more than just a few laughs.
🚧EMAIL version COMING SOON🚧 Right now we are squirreling away comics as they are completed. You are welcome to read and enjoy them - even work the exercises. But we won’t be sending them via email, newsletter-style, until we have enough built up so that we can send them reliably. (Hopefully early 2024). If you want to receive the comics by email weekly, make sure to subscribe!
Core Toons comics are set up so that you could put them up on the Smartboard in the morning for kids to dive into before the first bell. A teacher friend says he calls these kinds of things “bell-ringers”. We’ve also heard it called morning work. But of course, you can use them any time you want a quick entertaining learning challenge for your students.
The comics and exercises posted so far touch on various elements of ELA and Math to support common core expectations, but we also have plans for some fun and engaging science content on the way, too! We have organized the comics into two buckets: one for early elementary students and one for upper.
Most importantly though…what do you wish we made Core Toons about? Do you have ideas for what would be a hit with your students or would help support an area that students generally have a tougher time connecting with? Let us know!
