Answering your questions - by Rio Viera-Newton

It’s another wet, miserable weekend here in London (remind me why I live here again?) and instead of venturing out in the torrential rain, I thought I’d nest under a blanket with my oat milk matcha and answer some of your burning beauty questions. I’m going to make this a more regular thing, so at the bottom, I’ve attached a place where you can submit questions for future posts as well. Love ya!

I’m completely obsessed with the idea of going blonde. My Pinterest is filled with blonde inspiration photos, and I watch TikTok transformation videos constantly. But I’m scared it’s going to a.) look bad on me and b.) fry my hair. Should I do it? And if I do, where should I go?

Okay, I’m perhaps a bad influence in this department because I’m incredibly impulsive when it comes to all beauty decisions, but especially so when it comes to my hair. So, I believe if you can’t stop thinking about going blonde, you won’t be able to get over it until you do it. So, just do it! Even if it’s just for a couple of months, it’s such an exciting and thrilling transformation. Once you figure out what the right shade of blonde is for your skin tone (which a great colorist can help you do), you’ll look amazing. And if you hate it, you can simply dye it back.

Your hair will feel different—it’s “fried” because you are quite literally stripping all of its pigment. That’s unavoidable. Having said that, if you go to the right place and put in a bit of work to create a really great at-home hair routine, it won’t feel destroyed, just dry. The best piece of advice I can give is to go to someone really good. I’m going to do a whole feature on all of our many major hair transformations together, but my hair queen and confidant is without a doubt Emaly Baum at Beauty Supply. I genuinely believe she’s the best colorist out there. But she’s so picky and meticulous that anyone she’s hired at her salon, Beauty Supply, is going to be excellent. I loved being blonde, and I’ll probably do it again at some point in my life with Emaly.

How often did you wash your hair when you were platinum, and what was your haircare routine like?

Another blonde question! Keep ‘em coming, baby.

When I was platinum, I tried to minimize my hair wash days as much as possible (it’s best for both your color and the quality of your hair), so I swore by the Christophe Robin Baby Blonde hair mask for once a week wash days and the Living Proof Dry Shampoo on the other days. For shampoo, I think I would use something simple like the Davines Nourishing Shampoo.

Also, it’s not a toning treatment, but I highly, highly recommend investing in K18, which is this incredible hair mask that penetrates deep into the hair shaft to repair and strengthen damaged keratin bonds, leaving your hair healthier and more resilient. It’s a total game-changer.

Do you have a favorite pharmacy in Paris? What are your French pharmacy favorites?

I’ve only been to Paris a handful of times, so I’m by no means an expert, but I really love Citypharma at 26 Rue du Four. It can be pretty crowded, so I definitely recommend going on a weekday when they first open, but it’s big and has such an amazing selection of products.

As far as favorite products go, this is maybe kind of a basic answer, but A313 is such a good low-level, gentle retinoid that I often recommend for beginners, as it gives the skin such a stunning brightening and polishing effect. I also love the Nuxe body oils.

I want to make a career change, and I’m thinking about becoming an esthetician. Do you recommend it? What’s school like?
