Business, Happiness, and Death- insights from Warren Buffet
A few weeks back you had two of the richest and arguably smartest people in the world talking on stage-Charlie Munger and Warren Buffet and the most memorable quote for me wasn’t on business - but on life.
“If you want to know how to live your life, write your own obituary and reverse engineer it.”
Death! Yes, they spoke about death and frankly, there’s a bit of a personal story to it too.
A few years back I was going through some health issues. This forced me to take some drastic decisions including leaving Cupidly, an online wedding marketplace I had started and which was picking up rapidly - unlike most e-commerce we weren’t running losses and had not raised any funding.
Unfortunately, my health forced me to exit quickly (still made a profit via a white-labeled acquisition) and leave the startup re-branded in the hands of a much bigger player.
That also forced me to re-evaluate life, death, happiness, and the concept of Memento Mori.
It originated in ancient Rome. After a major military victory, the triumphant military general carried out a victory procession while people celebrated.
Riding in the same chariot, standing just behind the worshipped general, was a slave whose sole responsibility was to repeat the phrase - Memento Mori
“Remember you shall die".
Memento Mori
I do not intend this to be a damper on your spirits and Memento Mori is in no way an obstruction to life but rather a celebration of life.
Of realizing that life is finite and every moment and every choice comes from that finite quantity.
That just makes you celebrate life more.
Don’t take my word for it you can listen to two really smart, experienced men who said the same in the video above 😀
Key Takeaway:
Personally, one thing that has helped me in my journey is reading, learning a lot from spirituality to people + getting a life coach. While the former is a personal journey, for the latter I would recommend a certified life coach who helped (she charges ₹250 for the first session)
May seem crazy but it's an alternate strategy, and not just me but the great Warren Buffet believes in it.
