Character SpotlightCrystal Palace (Dead Boy Detectives)
Crystal Palace is the celebrity daughter of a modern artist and a rockstar. Her mother, Maddy Surname, tattooed Crystal’s head when she was born. It wasn’t a real tattoo, more an artistic statement.
Her parents are indulgent and supportive, especially when it comes to Crystal being independent. Despite her celebrity parents, Crystal hasn’t always had a happy childhood.
On her eighth birthday, she took her friend Rosa to the fair. Rosa wanted to ride the ghost train. Crystal wasn’t so sure. The ride started off ok, but when a real ghost appeared and took Rosa, there was nothing Crystal could do.
When the ghost train finished, Crystal was in shock and Rosa was in a coma from which she didn’t recover for nearly a decade.
Crystal is resilient and grew up into a teenager. She has an interest in anime and plays online games. Despite her independence, Crystal is convinced to accompany her mother and her rockstar father, Seth Von Hoverkraft, when Maddy stages a performance art
Maddy has planned a massive piece of performance art during which she will be steal Van Gogh’s Sunflowers and replace them with her own Bumflowers. It is a protest against the commercialization of art.
Unfortunately it has attracted unwanted attention. A group of criminals decide to use the event as a way of stealing Van Gogh’s masterpiece worth half a billion pounds.
Luckily for Crystal, Charles Rowland and Edwin Paine, the Dead Boy Detectives, have decided to solve the theft of the Sunflowers.
When the criminals throw a grenade that lands at Crystal’s feet, Charles manages to push her out of the way.
The event has consequences and the explosion stops Crystal’s heart. She travels to the Neitherlands, but manages to make it back to the land of the living, except she got a glimpse of Edwin’s school patch. Now Crystal has decided she wants to attend St Hilarion’s board school.
What Crystal doesn’t know is that the school is populated by ghosts and people possessed by demons. The Headmaster has been possessed by a demon and is using the students to created ghost weapons.
When a person’s heart stops, anything they are touching becomes a ghost object that is transported to the Neitherlands. The objects can then be collected and used by ghosts.
At St Hilarion’s, students are being forced to the infirmary where they are drugged and their heart is stopped. Their bodies are possessed by demons and the objects they are holding can be used. That includes knives used by ghosts to bully and injure ghosts and humans.
Crystal is next in line for a visit to the infirmary. Luckily Charles and Edwin step in to help, but they are over-powered by the demons and the ghost armed with knives.
Crystal uses the opportunity to set off the alarms and then burn down the school, allowing Charles, Edwin and herself to escape.
Crystal’s independence and resilience make her an asset to the Dead Boy Detectives. She also has an excellent treehouse that the Dead Boy Detectives use as a headquarters. Crystal has past experience with supernatural events and when she manages to make it out of St Hilarion’s alive, she has all the qualifications you could need to become a member of the Dead Boy Detectives.
