On Monday, four of my friends texted to inform me that Phoebe Bridgers is engaged to Paul Mescal, her longterm partner and star of the Hulu adaptation of Normal People (2018). I had a lot of thoughts about this news, most of which revolve around feeling unmoored by the idea that someone whose music is so sad and honest about the ugly parts of relationships could have so much faith and trust in someone that she marries them. I want to believe in something like that, and her engagement has brought to my attention that I harbor a lot of fear around the repercussions of loving anything or anyone fully. I admire that quality in other people, but I’m too guarded to think that it would ever be possible for me. Is that overly cynical? Am I doomed to be unfulfilled, limiting myself from potential joy in an effort to avoid potential pain? Will I ever be happy? Anyways, good spiral.
