Dealing with Change, your Inner Lion & Identity Foreclosure

There is a point to re-wiring and realignment in one's mind where the need isn't to change how you do things but to change how you deal with change. The adaptability one has to the zig-zagging ride that is our lives. To take every turn with the perspective that whatever you have worked towards and planned for till this instant might not hold water as we turn the corner into the next moment.

The reality of life is that plans are essential to moving towards the road ahead, taking that next step, and building the right momentum, but plans can't be held so tight that the road drives you rather than you navigating its evolving pathways.

Understanding this fact and not letting a change of plans throw you off is one of the best ways to always move towards a brighter tomorrow, no matter what the road of life throws at you at the next turn.

Are you envious of confident people? Well, it might help you to know that they’re not always as confident as they appear to be.

Here’s what you can do to be more like them: simply pretend to be your most confident self! You may be a lamb wearing a lion’s clothing but gradually you will grow into them.

Not convinced? Listen to this episode to find out how this formula worked for renowned stand-up comedian Dave Chapelle.

In this extremely insightful conversation on The Rich Roll Podcast, cognitive neuroscientist Dr Maya Shankar talks about her path from prodigy violinist to Senior Advisor in the White House. She shares what it was like working with President Obama, and how she leveraged cognitive science to help rebuild the public’s trust in institutions.

My biggest takeaway from this conversation was an interesting concept in cognitive sciences called Identity Foreclosure. It is the act of creating a self-identity early in life and then absolutely closing yourself off from change. So many times, in our lives we’ve believed we can only be one thing, or there is only one path destined for us. Maybe we have other identities within us, left to explore.

What changes are you barricading yourself from? If you just let yourself consider the unexpected, it could open up a world of opportunities for you. Something to think about.
