Design Dilemmas - by Lisa Dawson

Good morning all and this week, my dilemmas have been minimal which has meant that my week has been fairly calm. Calm weeks are a rare occurence in our house; there is normally some sort of drama going on, whether it be school or University based stress or my husband forgetting to collect his statins and deciding that he’s about to leave this mortal coil should he not get them within 24 hours. This happens a lot. Joe works in Manchester during the week which means that the job of drug dealing falls to me and, I admit, I do not prioritise it on my to do list. This is not because I am trying to push him off this mortal coil (although often it’s tempting), but because in order to get to the surgery I have to go in the opposite direction to my normal chores and park a five minute walk away. This week, he had a good supply so he’s not only still here, but we didn’t argue about it. A small win, indeed.

Drama, however, is fast incoming as my son Max departs for the party iconic Malia in the next two weeks on an all boys holiday. Despite having visited Crete regularly, we have never been to Malia and the only things that I know about it have been gained via The Inbetweeners. When I was a teenager, I would go away for two weeks with friends and my parents would literally have NFI where I was at all, unless I went to a phone box and called them. Oh, or sent them a postcard. I would have to give them the name of the ‘Hotel’ (a very upmarket word for what was basically a room with a wooden slatted bed, a sheet and a pillow) in case of dire family emergency (there was never one, obvs). Max has booked into a four star all inclusive (paid for by his Summer job) and should I wish, I could pinpoint his location at any time via Find My iPhone. Find My iPhone is a blessed curse. The last time he went away he was in Ayia Napa and although I tried to stop myself from looking, it seemed that every time I did he was either apparently falling off a cliff or in the middle of the sea. This time, I am going to try and stick to WhatsApp with some vague ‘are you still alive?’ style messages instead of sending myself into a frenzy of trauma by location mapping him. Sigh.

Right, back to your dilemmas and this week, we are tackling a variety of quandaries including how to decorate a space when your husband insists on leaving his favourite item within it, plus how to find a notice board that is not cork orientated (okay, there might be one corkish option but it’s a good one). Switching up an inherited kitchen that isn’t in your style and how to hang ceramics on the wall without them falling off (been there, done that). And finally, good Euro snacks that are easier than easy (in order to answer this one, I had to make it and I’m not complaining).
