Do You Really Need Augustinus Bader The Rich Cream?

It’s fun to write only for paid subscribers. Because I can say whatever I want. There are a few hundred of us and I’m grateful for you, whether you’re a friend, family or simply someone who values me at least $7.

I’ve updated last year’s Substack about whether Augustinus Bader The Rich Cream is worth it, a question I still get at least once or twice a month. I have new thoughts on the subject and also a worthy dupe that’s much less I share below, plus how I incorporate it into my winter skincare lineup.

An FAQ around these parts is whether Augustinus Bader The Rich Cream is worth it. I’ve used it pretty steadily since it came into my life the year it launched, in 2018. Sometimes I was lucky enough to score gratis P.R. samples. But I’ve also purchased my fair share.

The Beauty State of the Union

First, let me beep, beep, back up the truck and talk about the Beauty State of the Union. So much of the beauty industry reminds me of this quote of Stringer Bell’s in “The Wire,” albeit about a very different thing—make no mistake. He’s talking about how most days are about 40 degrees. But the real excitement is when it’s a lot colder or warmer—then you’ve got something to celebrate or complain about. The weather livens up the mundane either way.

Similarly, in beauty, there is, increasingly so, a lot of medium/mediocre products. I’d say that comprises about 80% of what’s offered. 10% of it truly sucks. And 10% of it is utterly sublime.

That’s why I write this newsletter—it’s about what is my 10% sublime. Of course, beauty products are subjective. What’s sublime to me may be aggressively medium to you.

So, as this concept relates to The Rich Cream, is it worth buying at $180 for 1 oz, which you’ll use per the instructions within a couple of months? Or is it the beauty equivalent of a 40-degree day? Read on and find out.
