Dooku: Jedi Lost & Dark Disciple Reviews

It would’ve felt unnatural to review these books separately. While the stories are different and they’re not formally related, they go hand in hand. Naturally, Asajj Ventress being Count Dooku’s apprentice makes for an easy connection between the two.

Dooku: Jedi Lost is a fun, easy read. The script format of the book ends up better than expected. For better and worse, it doesn’t allow the descriptive world building that other Star Wars novels include. The reader doesn’t get lost in three paragraphs worth of detailing but we’re left wanting more out of some scenes.

The telling of this story through Asajj Ventress’s point of view is fantastic. In between the flashbacks of Dooku’s upbringing through the Jedi Academy, we’re given bits and pieces of how much Ventress truly loathes him.

The best parts of this book come from Dooku’s journey through the Jedi Academy. This is something that we don’t get a ton of in other Star Wars media. Dooku’s time in the academy and the relationship with his sister eventually leads in to leave the Jedi Order in a unique way. He’s not primarily looking for power but rather believes the Jedi aren’t doing their part in helping the galaxy. There’s a fine line between playing politics and wanting to simply be the peace keepers the Jedi claim to be. This line gets more and more blurred for Dooku until he hits a breaking point.

This book starts off fast as the Jedi Council sends Quinlan Vos out to befriend Asajj Ventress in an attempt to kill Count Dooku. That initial hunt for Ventress and Vos’s work to gain her trust without letting her know he’s a Jedi make for some of the best parts of this book. Ventress has layers that we don’t necessarily get in the Clone Wars series.

Pages 60-130ish felt like a lull in this book that was tough to get through at some points as Vos and Ventress are working together as bounty hunters. It’s pivotal to the story of how their relationship grows but there’s some fluff in here that could’ve been cut out.

Things pick up once Ventress learns who Vos is and begins to train him on the dark side. All this leading to Ventress’s backstory on how she initially became Dooku’s apprentice and his manipulation of her.

Cameos from Boba Fett, Anakin and Obi-Wan add to a few fun actions moments in the book. The icing on the cake is Anakin’s “roger, roger” joke.
