Family Matters - Toby Jones, His Famous Father And Other Unfamiliar Familial Relationships
My most shared Tweet of recent times concerned the fact that Toby Jones - enjoying widespread praise for his performance as the title character in Mr Bates Vs The Post Office (he makes for a bloody superb post office does Toby) - is the son of Freddie Jones, star of The Elephant Man, Juggernaut, Erik The Viking and all manner of TV programmes and stage dramas.
All of which got me thinking about other underappreciated family relationships. For example, do many people realise that Campbell Scott (Dying Young, Roger Dodger, Big Night) is the son of double-Oscar winner and all-round shit George C Scott…?
… Or that Emily Lloyd (Wish You Were Here, In Country, A River Runs Through It)
is the daughter of fellow actor - and Peckham’s longest-serving street sweeper - Roger Lloyd Pack…?
… And while it’s pretty well-known that EastEnders actress Laila Morse is the sister of the great and good Gary Oldman…
… you might not have realised that the Oscar-nominated Rosemary Harris (The Ploughman’s Lunch, Tom & Viv, the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man films) is the mother of Jennifer Ehle (who won a BAFTA for her portrayal of Elizabeth Bennett in Andrew Davies’ BBC adaptation of Pride & Prejudice).
I’ll post more as and when they come to mind. Of course, if there’s a movie relationship you consider unsung, don’t hesitate to drop me a line.
