HEKA! - Magical Egypt's Substack

Hello Lovelies! I have been MIA and for that I am very sorry. I do have a good excuse though. I have been working on editing Season 4 Episode one: HEKA!

If I may say so myself, the film is truly exceptional, showcasing numerous luminaries in the field. Though I intentionally scratch only the surface, I believe it serves as a fantastic introduction to a topic that, unfortunately, has largely been dismissed and undervalued. This dismissal, I argue, is not without reason, and the film sheds light on the specific factors contributing to its marginalization.

In a world dominated by scientific rationality and materialistic ideologies, the concept of magick often finds itself relegated to the realms of fantasy and fiction. Yet, the undeniable truth is that magick has been an integral part of human history, persisting across cultures and civilizations since time immemorial. From ancient rituals to contemporary practices in places like Thailand, magick endures, challenging our modern paradigm that dismisses the mystical and the unexplained.

The Persistence of Magick:

Magick, in various forms, has been a constant companion to humanity throughout its journey. Whether through shamanic rituals, alchemical pursuits, or folk traditions, the belief in supernatural forces shaping our reality has endured. In contemporary Thailand, for example, magick is not an antiquated notion but a living, breathing aspect of daily life. From sacred ceremonies to protective amulets, the people of Thailand continue to intertwine magick with their existence.

The Paradigm Shift:

What has changed, however, is our collective paradigm—a framework through which we make sense of the world. Over the past few centuries, the dominant paradigm has shifted towards materialism, fueled by the successes of science and technological advancements. This shift has brought about an era where the empirical, measurable, and repeatable take precedence over the mysterious and the unseen.

The Materialist Construct:

Materialism, as a worldview, asserts that the only reality is that which can be measured and observed. This construct has been remarkably successful in explaining and manipulating the physical world, leading to unprecedented progress. However, its limitations become apparent when confronted with phenomena that fall outside its defined boundaries.

The Suppression of the Unexplained:

In the pursuit of progress and understanding, the materialist paradigm has often marginalized or outright dismissed experiences that do not fit within its confines. Rupert Sheldrake, a renowned biologist, has faced scrutiny for his explorations into phenomena such as telepathy and morphic resonance, which challenge the established scientific dogma.

Magick Redefined:

To grasp the essence of magick in the 21st century, one must reconsider preconceived notions. Magick, in its truest form, may not be the stuff of fairy tales or Hollywood movies but a subtle force interwoven with the fabric of existence. It could be the unexplained synchronicities, the power of intention, or the interconnectedness of all things—an undercurrent in the symphony of life that eludes our attempts to confine it within the materialist framework.

Egyptian culture.

The study of magick in its own right is fascinating, but when interwoven with the tapestry of ancient Egyptian civilization, it takes on an even more captivating dimension. This amalgamation provides a unique lens through which we can begin to unravel the mysteries of a civilization that has both intrigued and confounded scholars for centuries.

The ancient Egyptians had a worldview that diverged significantly from our modern materialistic perspective. In a culture where the spiritual and the divine were seamlessly integrated into daily life, magick played a central role. It wasn't an esoteric or isolated practice but an intrinsic aspect of their understanding of the world and their place in it.

One of the challenges in comprehending ancient Egypt lies in our contemporary mindset—one deeply rooted in materialism. We are arguably the most materialistic culture in history, attempting to fathom a society that was likely among the least material-oriented. This fundamental dichotomy presents a myriad of difficulties in interpreting and appreciating the nuances of ancient Egyptian beliefs, practices, and symbols.

By reinserting magick into the equation, we reintroduce a crucial element that was integral to the ancient Egyptian worldview. Magick, in this context, was not merely a set of mystical rituals; it was the very fabric that connected the seen and the unseen, the tangible and the intangible. Understanding the role of magick allows us to bridge the gap between our materialistic vantage point and the spiritual richness that defined ancient Egypt.

As this mystical element is added back into the narrative, numerous aspects of ancient Egyptian culture start to fall into place. The enigmatic symbols, intricate rituals, and seemingly mystical practices begin to make sense within the context of a society where magick was a living, breathing force.

In essence, the absence of magick from our understanding of ancient Egypt leaves us with an incomplete and distorted picture. It is akin to trying to appreciate a masterpiece with crucial colors missing from the palette. By acknowledging and embracing the significance of magick in ancient Egyptian culture, we open the door to a more holistic comprehension of this extraordinary civilization, allowing its intricacies to click into focus and revealing a depth of wisdom that transcends the constraints of our materialistic lens.

Embracing a Holistic Worldview:

As we navigate the complexities of our modern existence, there is a growing call to embrace a more holistic worldview. This doesn't necessarily mean abandoning the scientific method but expanding our understanding to accommodate the unexplored dimensions of human experience. Acknowledging the persistence of magick invites us to explore the mysteries that lie beyond the scope of materialism.

Conclusion:

Magick is not a relic of the past; it is a living force that continues to shape the narratives of diverse cultures worldwide. The challenge is to recognize that our current paradigm, while invaluable in many respects, does not encompass the entirety of the human experience. By acknowledging the existence of magick, we open ourselves to a deeper understanding of reality—one that transcends the limitations of our materialist construct and invites us to explore the profound mysteries that surround us.
