Iowa TE Sam LaPorta Scouting Notes & NFL Projection

LaPorta is 6-4, 249 pounds, but played just over 17 percent of his snaps in the slot. He missed just one game due to injury in his entire college career. Over the past three seasons, LaPorta has started 33 games and played over 2,000 snaps.

Iowa hasn’t boasted the most explosive passing offense, but LaPorta has produced nonetheless. In his career, LaPorta has 153 catches for 1,786 yards and five touchdowns. The past two seasons have been remarkably consistent, as LaPorta went for 53-670-3 in 2021, before collecting 58-657-1 this past season. LaPorta turned 22 in January.

Projection: In-line or flexed tight end

LaPorta isn’t getting the hype that many of the top tight ends in the class have received, but that could change soon. Yes, I understand he has his weaknesses. Over his college career, LaPorta didn’t make as many contested grabs as you’d like for a tight end, and drops were a small issue at times. There are certainly better blocking tight ends in the draft, especially when it comes to in-line work in the box.
