I understand that the degradation of US institutions isn’t something any of us should laugh about, but in this particular case it was hilarious. George Santos has been a wild story in U.S. politics ever since he first won his nomination and it begin emerge that he hadn’t been, shall we say, entirely truthful in his campaign. At first, there were a few inconsistencies or things that didn’t quite add up. As I recall, these were unsexy things like where he went to college or if he’d held certain internships. It would have been bad if he had lied about those things but I feel like he probably could have gotten away with it? Like is that really that bad? Lauren Boebert is still in Congress after her salacious scandal in which she got kicked out of a theater for vaping, screaming, and fondling her date at a Beetlejuice musical. What’s embellishing your resume in a fake-it-til-you-make-it world compared to that? But George Santos’s lies didn’t stop there. In fact, they never ended. It was as though he is some kind of maniacal compulsive liar or a lying addict or even perhaps suffering from reality TV-induced brain worms. We may never know the final prognosis. Anyway, as a result of all this lying, he was kicked out of Congress and the memes have been juicy. #DivaDown was trending on Twitter and Instagram was going crazy. George Santos was a good, awful politician for our time. Unlike say Matt Gaetz, Marjorie Taylor Greene, or Jim Jordan, George Santos was comparatively harmless. In the midst of everything else that’s been going on in the world of politics and with an election next year, there's something mildly calming about people being able to laugh in this moment.
