mistry - It's A Cat's Life by Rachel Wells

You have probably heard of Palm reading - it’s an ancient fortune telling art which originated in India. Palmistry believes a person’s hand can tell a lot about them, and also predict their future. So, does it work for cats? We believe it can.

The amazing astrologer, Jessica Adams, who is also a colleague of mine, has written about cat star signs for me and she also read my cat’s paw. Is it a thing? Well, it absolutely should be.

Increasingly popular in Japan, the land where all things “cat” seem to stem from, we believe it is. And if nothing else, it’s really good fun!

Can you really find a deeper connection with your cat via their paw? And can you also read his or her personality? Jessica read for Lady Alfie. We took a close-up photo for her and she was pretty much spot on. So, how does it work?

Firstly, you will be looking for a prominent toe, or particular splotches of colour, raised bumps to find out if your cat is Fire, Air, Earth or water as a personality type. This can help you discover if you and your family really click with the cat. Because your signs are linked to the cat’s. Just as humans use star signs to see if they are compatible with each other, it can work for cats (and other pets) too.  This will be echoed in the paw. It’s the stand-out part of the paw that shows you the outstanding ‘print’ of the cat’s personality.

In Japan, they refer to pawmistry as ‘Nekteso’, and an author called Akatsuki is attributed as creating it there.  He said they were five main personality types that could be read in the cats paws using the middle pad for the and many subtypes taking the paw as a whole. However, I think the cats paw needs to be seen by a professional to be read, because it can be quite hard to decipher!

But if you are interested, then here are the five types as identified by Akatsuki. Look at the middle pad (jelly bean). Is it either heart shaped, rounded, flat topped with two side bulges, flat but less pronounced bulges, or triangular?

Quick guide:

Heart = cuddly and snuggly

Rounded = adventurous and social

Flat top with side bulges = loners, quiet and wary of strangers

Flat with less pronounced bulges = aloof and choosy about the company they keep

Triangular = very enthusiastic and a bit crazy.

Does any of that sound like your cat? This is just a fun, brief guide from our Japanese cat lover. But when we read paws we do go more into detail! There can be a lot gleaned from a paw, just as there can from a human hand.

And if you think you would like to have your cat’s paw read, we have a unique opportunity in the ‘Children in Read,’ auction for the wonderful Children in Need. The lot is a signed copy of an Alfie book, plus a ‘zoom’ paw reading for your cat with Jessica Adams and myself. We don’t offer these to anyone else, and so it really is a great opportunity and for such a great cause. Link below for anyone who is interested!

Catherine The Great (1762-1796)

I did not know Catherine The Great was a famous cat lover - but apparently, she was. She honoured the cats of Russia by giving them ‘official rat catcher’ status. Her working cats not only got titles but also salaries and extra food. It was a pretty good job in those days!

Russian Blue was of course her favoured breed.

She adored her cats, and treated them like royalty, and was known to give Russian Blue cats away as gifts for royalty from other countries.

This Alfie’s Club is dedicated to a sweet cat named Tiffany who brought so much joy to her family over the past thirteen years.

This photo was taken when Tiffany’s human family had moved into a house, just so they could finally have cats! Tiffany and her sister Coco were rescued together on September 11th 2010, she had a bad tummy and was going to be put down the next day, and when we heard this we had no choice but to save her and feed her good food and give her lots of cuddles!

Tiffany turned good in only a matter of days. While she was timid and shy her sister was super playful and they used to chase each other around their Paddington home. She had cat birthday parties every year and when the kids came along she became a little terrified of them, but would still purr so loudly you could hear her from another room, loved chasing her tail at midnight and would dream so deeply she fell off the lounge and would love to be brushed and look at you with her dreamy eyes!

Wishing Tiffany a beautiful journey into cat heaven.

If you would like to send us your pet photo, the details on what you need to send and how, can be found here: Alfie’s Club.

Plus be sure to include any stories about your cat - particularly the special friendship you have with them - in the comments below.
