New York Minute - by Marlien Rentmeester
Dimes Square is technically a triangle, a few blocks-radius on New York City’s Lower East Side, teeming with dimly-lit bars, cafe tables that spill out on to the streets, stuck-in-time storefronts with signs written in Chinese, plus a high concentration of people dressed with an uncontrived nonchalance that screams cool. While staying at 9 Orchard right in the center of things last weekend, I came across a woman, pictured below, who not only embodied the neighborhood’s distinct style but also inspired me to give it a whirl, with a pair of belted low slung, loose-fitting jeans, tucked into Larroude knee-high boots and an oversized cashmere crewneck.
Then there was this woman, below, cooler than cool in a black leather blazer and trousers at 9AM on a Saturday! I mean… who pulls that off? Needless to say, I was not in black leather—quite the opposite as I was getting ready to exercise, so the (embarrassed) stalker in me had to capture/snap this shot from behind. Hers is by The Reformation, but this (size up!), this and this are also terrific.
Apart from people watching, I plowed through Cacio e Pepe at Roscioli, baguettes et beurre at Le Dive, thin-crust (late-night) pizzas at Grand Street Pizza, spicy salmon hand rolls at DOMODOMO, and literally a bucket of fries at Corner Bar. I burned about 8% the calories off, biking across the Williamsburg Bridge, zipping back via the Manhattan Bridge, looping around a very yellow and orange Central Park, all in my Left on Friday, pic below, that was cute enough to fit in with the sweet-toothed queues at L’Appartment 4F (pistachio croissants!) and Michaeli Bakery (chocolate rugelach!).
It should be said that before I left for NYC, I did a pre-trip dress rehearsal in Doen and even sparkled up for the flight in my denim Zara jacket, Sezane sweater, and Adina Reyter baubles. The sleeper hit of my suitcase: this $172 Gimaguas one-shoulder knit that finessed day to night.
Speaking of baubles, I recently organized my jewelry box, designed by LA-based jeweler Ariel Gordon. Treasures come from Dorsey, Maison Mayle, Jenna Blake, Heritage Jewelry, and Lisa Statt, and, of course, Ariel Gordon. Pretty, no?
Now on to more sparkle with these gems…
Pre-loved Prada tessuto drawstring pouch, $275
Oroton lace flower mini skirt and blouse. (Squint and it’s Prada).
Padded Pixie Market bomber jacket, $99, inspired by Acne Studios.
Chain-trimmed faux leather jacket, $112
Wearing my Khaite $79 dupe that I picked up here in NYC and Bottega Veneta bag in gorgeous green!
See you next week with lots more!
