News and updates from SxSE

Hello friends! It has been about a month since my last post, so I wanted to check in to let you know I’m still here, and to share a few updates.

I am excited to share that the good folks over at Gamecock Central have agreed to carry an ongoing series from South by Southeast on their site! They will publish a mix of new material, and some archival pieces roughly each month during the summer, and more frequently during the fall, winter and spring. New pieces will appear here on SxSE as well. The debut article was the story of legendary Gamecock and Minnesota Viking, Bobby Bryant.

Look for a new piece in the coming days, as we’ll peel back the layers of Williams-Brice Stadium, that grand structure sitting at the corner of Bluff Road and George Rogers Boulevard, to a time before it was Williams-Brice, and even before it was Carolina Stadium. The “Cock-pit” debuted as Columbia Municipal Stadium, a 17,000 seat venue built in the midst of the Great Depression as a project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The new stadium debuted on October 6, 1934, when the Gamecocks took on Virginia Military Institute.

There’s more to the story than I realized when I first started looking into it. More to come on that, but in the meantime, check out the program cover from that first game, courtesy of the University of South Carolina’s digital archives…

Book update

I’m working through some final edits on A Gamecock Odyssey - University of South Carolina Sports in the Independent Era, and the indexer is doing his work. It never occurred to me that there were people who indexed books for a living! It has been fun to see the publishing process unfold, and I have learned a little more at each step.

Things are starting to pick up now. Once the final edits and indexing are complete, around late June, the book will be off to the printer, with a release date of November 14th. My friends over at USC Press are brainstorming promotional ideas, and we have had some fun conversations around that. Its going to be an exciting fall as football cranks up in just a few months and we get closer to release date. More to come on all of that.

As always, thank you for subscribing and reading. I really can’t thank you enough.

Until the next post, cheers to a fun and safe Memorial Day weekend, and most importantly, to the brave men and women who, over the decades and centuries, have made the ultimate sacrifice for all of us.
