Peak-Shmeak... When was the last time you went full Rose Aguineau?

To keep working, I depend on the financial support of gotham girl’s readers and sponsors. I know your resources are precious too. And so, I am ridiculously grateful for your help. Now, more than ever, gotham girl could use your support.

Hello, Lovelies,

So, I’m watching True Detective: Night Country, and I won’t lie, I’m ready for it to make more sense and pick up the pace. Still, there’s a great deal here… indigenous mysticism, missing women, an eco-thriller, the limits of the human grotesque, and echoes of deep grief. Here’s the trailer ICYMI:

So, Trooper Navarro (Jody’s partner) drops in on Rose Aguineau (played by Fiona Shaw, who steals every single scene she’s in) and is stunned to find the woman she thinks of as a crazed old crone, dressed to the nines in heels out in the Arctic, having prepared an elaborate Christmas celebration for no one but herself.

As writer Sam Baker notes it could be a moment of supreme loneliness and isolation. But, somehow, it isn’t. Instead, it perfectly captures Rose’s utter self-possession and contentment.

“Who were you?” Navarro asks trying to make sense of it all.

“Before I was old and crazy?” Rose shoots back.

“No! Before Alaska.” says an incredulous Navarro.

Pondering a moment, and looking the very definition of old-school glamour, Rose lights up a cigarette, exhales with great ease, and confesses…

I was having a moment like this just yesterday… I had gone full Rose Aguineau. I’d had enough.

I was so relieved, that I sat down and ate a piece of very luxurious dark chocolate cake for breakfast. It was heaven—especially with coffee.

I look forward to your thoughts and tales. Until next time… #MoreRose.
