Protecting Your Peace is A Choice

I am often asked how I live and maintain a peaceful life, and my answer is simple: I always choose peace over chaos.

Recently, a family member called me and immediately wanted to share what sounded like drama. I had to politely express my disinterest in the subject and preferred to change the topic. This is an example of me choosing peace when others decide to focus on chaos. Despite my family member's persistence in sharing drama, I continued to assert that I had no interest in what was going on and preferred to mind my own business.

Protecting your peace is a choice that you have to make because others will not make that choice for you. Some people enjoy drama and chaos, while others are oblivious to the problems they create.

Protecting your peace may involve:

  • Focusing on matters that concern you and have an impact on your life

  • Not taking other people's actions personally

  • Allowing others to be wrong without feeling the need to argue

  • Stepping away from dysfunction and chaos

  • Letting others have the final say

  • Establishing clear boundaries regarding what you are willing to tolerate

When you choose peace over chaos, it is important to understand that some people in your life may judge you negatively for refusing to engage in dysfunction. They might make comments like, "you think you're better than everyone else" or "you're arrogant," and they may even try to portray you as a villain for not tolerating nonsense. Growing means learning to be comfortable with the fact that some individuals have a distorted perception of reality. However, it is important to remember that their opinions are their own and should not affect your own sense of self-worth.

Remember this: a peaceful life is attainable, but you have to choose it, it won’t choose you.
