Joyeuses Pâques! (Happy Easter!)

This is the message I received the most this morning when I woke up...

By the way, what is Pâques?

Get ready to hop into some egg-citing and egg-ceptional fun facts about Pâques🍫

Pâques is a Christian holiday that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The holiday is always on a Sunday, but the date changes every year because it's based on the lunar calendar.

This year, it's... Today🙂

Easter Monday (Lundi de Pâques) is a public holiday in France.

Many businesses and shops are closed, and people often take the day off to spend time with family and friends.

The service often includes special music and the lighting of the Easter candle (cierge pascal).

In some areas, there's also a procession where the congregation carries a cross through the streets.

Children search for eggs (oeufs) that have been hidden by the Easter Bunny (Le Lapin de Pâques).

In some regions of France, there's even a competition to see who can find the most eggs😂

Legend has it that on the Thursday before Easter, all the church bells in France fly to Rome to be blessed by the Pope. They return to France on Easter Sunday and bring chocolate and other treats for the children. Some people believe that the bells actually have wings, and children are told to listen for their sound on Easter morning.

For example, in the north, people eat a dish called "Pâté de Pâques," which is a meat pie with eggs baked inside.

Overall, Pâques is a time for families to come together, celebrate, and enjoy the spring season👪

  • Pâques: Easter

  • œufs: eggs

  • lapin de Pâques: Easter Bunny

  • la chasse aux oeufs: Easter egg hunt

  • chocolat: chocolate

  • Carême: Lent

  • dimanche des Rameaux: Palm Sunday

  • Vendredi Saint: Good Friday

  • Lundi de Pâques: Easter Monday

  • messe: Mass

  • bénédiction: blessing

  • cierge pascal: Easter candle

  • croix: cross

  • agneau pascal: Easter lamb

  • se faire rouler dans la farine: to be fooled or deceived (can be used to describe someone who falls for a prank during Easter)

  • fêter Pâques avec les poules: to celebrate Easter very early in the morning (literally "to celebrate Easter with the chickens")

  • la chasse aux œufs est ouverte: the Easter egg hunt is on (literally "the egg hunt is open")

  • le lapin de Pâques a fait son boulot: the Easter Bunny has done his job (to describe a successful Easter egg hunt)

  • prendre un bain de foule: to be in a crowded place (to describe attending an Easter parade or festival)

  • se gaver d'œufs en chocolat: to stuff oneself with chocolate eggs (literally "to gorge oneself on chocolate eggs")

I hope all of this will help you better understand and communicate about Pâques!

  • The use of prepositions.

When talking about Pâques in French, you will often use the preposition "à" to indicate the time of the holiday ("à Pâques" meaning "at Easter").

You may use "pour" to indicate the purpose of the holiday, such as "Je suis allé chez ma grand-mère pour Pâques" (I went to my grandmother's for Easter).

In French, nouns have a gender (masculine or feminine), and this also applies to Easter-related words.

For example, "Pâques" and "la fête de Pâques" are feminine, while "le lundi de Pâques" is masculine.

When using adjectives to describe Easter-related words, you must also use the correct gender agreement, such as "une joyeuse fête de Pâques" (a happy Easter) or "un bon lundi de Pâques" (a good Easter Monday).

C’est par là.
