Review: Masters of the Air, "Part Five"

“You sure I’m the right man for this?” “No.”

Masters of the Air is, as I’ve noted in past reviews, a show that is essentially standing on the shoulders of giants. Band of Brothers and The Pacific loom large for many viewers as high watermarks of the modern representation of wartime storytelling. (I think it’s safe to say that Band of Brothers is always going to have a bit more of a passionate fanbase, but they’re both excellent series.) As we now arrive at the halfway point of the series with “Part Five,” though, Masters is running into a strange problem that seems at least partially self-inflicted. How do you thread the needle between being historically accurate and dramatically satisfying? With Band of Brothers and The Pacific, the answer was clear and remarkable for how smoothly the balance was achieved. I hope to have a change of mind soon enough, but for now, I’m not entirely sure Masters is balancing its two halves well.
