Review: What We Do in the Shadows, Local News
Let’s start this week with the subplot to “Local News,” which I think is the part of this episode that will matter the most to the overall direction of this What We Do in the Shadows season—and is also the part I found the most genuinely affecting. For the past couple of weeks, the story of Guillermo’s half-transition to vampirism has been mostly shunted aside, but here it reaches what could be a turning point, for the character and for the show. And even if it doesn’t (and let’s face it, this series rarely makes permanent changes), the way Guillermo reacts to becoming even more of a misfit is still poignant.
For most of this episode, Guillermo is at his mother Silvia’s apartment, where he intends to say goodbye to her, operating under the assumption that he will soon be a full vampire—and therefore a target of her whole side of the family, who are natural born vampire-killers.
