Season 10, Episode 3: Oh Baby

Happy Tuesday Hearties! It’s time for me to share my weekly thoughts about the latest episode of When Calls the Heart Season 10! I can’t believe we’re already a fourth of the way through the season already! Time is flying by!

Tourists start arriving, including the St. Johns, who may prove to be trouble for Bill; Elizabeth rallies all of Rosemary's friends to plan the perfect baby shower.

So, full disclosure, I’m not a fan of baby showers, both on in real life and on the screen. As a single gal with no kids of my own, I just find them to be boring and slightly awkward. Therefore, the idea watching of an entire episode dedicated to Rosemary’s baby shower didn’t thrill me.

It wasn’t much of surprise to me that the baby shower plotline was probably the weakest part of this episode. However, it did have some comedic moments, as well as some heartwarming ones, which I am excited to discuss! That being said, let’s dive right in!

Once again, Lucas and Elizabeth didn’t share many scenes together in this episode. However, I did like their individual storylines and scenes, as well as the ones they did share.

I enjoyed seeing Elizabeth and Lucas taste-testing their wedding cake together. It did surprise me that they only tried one flavor, instead of a few different types. It also surprised me that Lucas was the one to ultimately choose what kind of cake it would be.

However, since this is his first wedding, I’m glad he isn’t leaving all of the decision-making to bride. The wedding being Lucas’s first and Elizabeth’s second certainly makes for an interesting wedding planning dynamic that I wasn’t really expecting, and I’m curious to see how it plays out as the season progresses.

Elizabeth was mostly focused on giving Rosemary a wonderful, baby shower surprise (as I mentioned earlier). And while I don’t particularly like baby showers, I thought that Elizabeth had some hilarious moments trying to prepare for it, my favorite being when she told Rosemary about Minnie’s plans to include “Don’t Say Baby” in the shower’s activities. Her facial expressions were hilarious!

The friendship between Elizabeth and Rosemary is very sweet this season, with a bit of that signature “Rosemary” bluntness, which I love. I’m glad these two are leaning on each other so much, and that Elizabeth is supporting Rosemary through her pregnancy. It’s a refreshing change after seeing them at odds so much during the last two seasons.

I am excited to see the two of them face the arrival of the Coulter baby together. I think it will really showcase their friendship and how far they’ve come.

Side Note: I loved seeing Elizabeth back in the classroom again! It’s been to long! She’s at her best when she’s living out her calling.

I definitely enjoyed seeing Lucas play a figurative game of poker with Jerome Smith to help save Henry from six years in prison. Jerome is one of my least favorite characters, so it was gratifying to see him back down (for now.) I am actually glad that the writers are bringing back elements of Lucas’s character that fell by the wayside over the last few seasons. He’s a gambler, which is something about him that hasn’t been explored for quite some time. I’m glad we’re seeing more of it again this season.

Lucas’s plan to bluff Jerome Smith with a fabricated story and a non existent document is definitely risky. I was honestly shocked that Jerome backed down as quickly as he did. It has me wondering, will this issue come back up again later on in the season? My guess is, probably not. If it did however, Lucas could find himself in some hot water for lying about the document he had and how he got it.

It’s a similar situation to when Lucas saved Janette from Amos Dixon. While in both cases, Lucas’s intentions were good, his methods weren’t completely honest, and that could potentially get him in trouble later on in Season 10. We’ll just have to wait and see to find out.

Lee and Rosemary shared a few scenes in this episode, even though the focus was mostly placed on Rosemary’s baby shower. Lee is as supportive as ever, and encourages Rosemary that she will be “the perfect mother.” That was a really sweet moment between them, especially when he revealed the (giant) crib that he and Joseph has made together.

Another moment between these two that stood out to me was when Lee asked to open one of Rosemary’s trunks, and Rosemary quickly refused. It has me wondering, what’s in the trunk? And will we get to see it’s contents?

My guess is that clues about Rosemary’s past, her family life, and her mother are tucked away in the box, and Rosemary isn’t ready to explore them just yet with the impending birth of her first child. I do think we’ll find out more later on in the season, after the baby is born. For now though, it remains a mystery.

I am SO excited to see Rosemary give birth and for the Coulter’s to be parents! Needless to say, I am really looking forward to next week’s episode for that very reason.

I didn’t hate the dynamic between Nathan and Faith in this episode. They definitely had a few cute moments. But I didn’t love it either. We still don’t know what happened between them, and I still can’t understand why Faith’s feelings for Nathan suddenly seem non-existent. It’s very confusing, and I am having a really hard time getting invested in them as a couple.

If there is one thing about them that I can say for certain, it’s this. I really don’t like Faith’s attitude so far. I have tried to understand where this weird iciness is coming from, but I can’t. In light of how she felt last season, it makes no sense.

I get that she is independent and doesn’t need Nathan, but she also doesn’t need to treat him like this, especially when he’s trying to help. Her attitude this week bothered me more than it did last week, which is saying a lot. It’s not making me want to root for them; in fact, it’s doing the exact opposite. Hopefully, that changes, sooner rather than later if they are meant to be together.

I found Nathan’s efforts to protect Faith to be both sweet and confusing. He’s looking out for her, and wants to smooth things out between them. That’s very admirable. What confuses me though, is why? To be blatantly honest, he doesn’t really seem like he’s attracted to Faith, and she isn’t giving him much reason to be.

It all feels very forced, like Nathan is trying to salvage a relationship with Faith that really isn’t worth salvaging. Like I said before, we still don’t know what happened between them, so it’s difficult for me to understand why Nathan is putting in so much effort for so little in return. As of right now though, it’s all making me really sad.

Part of me wonders if Nathan is actively trying to make things work between he and Faith in an effort to move on from Elizabeth. Maybe he is trying to open his heart to new possibilities, but the romance just isn’t there. Maybe he’s fighting for a relationship that’s already a lost cause. I don’t really know.

All I know is that nothing about Nathan and Faith’s relationship is flowing naturally this season. I don’t feel anything when I watch their scenes together, which was not the case during Season 9. I hate saying that, because I’ve been rooting for them to be together.

Overall, not a great start for this potential couple. So far, this love story doesn’t really feel worth the five year wait. I am hopeful that things will get better though if they are truly meant to be. Good things come to those who hope, right?

Overall, Episode 3 was better than I expected it to be. We had the introduction of Madeline St. John and her “son" to Hope Valley. I find her character to be really intriguing, and I love her 20’s vibe! More of her (and Bill) please! I’m anxious to see where that plotline leads.

I also really did enjoy Allie’s discovery of how Hope Springs was formed! She was so excited, and Nathan was so proud. It was adorable! Hopefully, Henry will rise out of the “depths of despair” and realize all of the good he has done for Hope Valley. Everyone around him forgives him. He needs to learn to forgive himself too.

As for next week’s episode, I couldn’t be more excited! Rosemary is finally going to have the baby! I really can’t express how excited I am to see all of this take place, so I won’t try.

I’m glad that the entire town seems to be involved in some way or other in this particular story. If there’s one thing Season 10 is doing extremely well, it is showcasing just how fundamental the sense of community is to the show. The cherry on top is the fact that we will be getting our first candlelight vigil in YEARS! It’s going to be a big episode for Hearties everywhere, and I hope you’ll join me for my review next week!

Until then, I hope you all have a wonderful week! Thank you for the endless support! Love you all!
