Song 33 // Joyce Manor
Thanks for showing me around last night
Hope you don't think I don't care
Because I do, I just don't know if I
Should feel this bad about you
It’s been a hectic past few weeks as I wrapped up my first year of grad school. While I’ve still been listening to Charli XCX’s CRASH on repeat, there has been plenty of new and old music to fill all my late nights. The good news, in addition to looking forward to summer, is that this newsletter is back to a more regularly scheduled program.
Recently, Joyce Manor released a new song which drove me to fall back into their discography again.
After finishing your birthday drugs
Look at a yearbook unprepared
And betray yourself to sleep it off
Then come down to collect it
The punk rock band from Torrance, California creates catchy and cathartic songs that will have you belting alongside lead vocalist and guitarist Barry Johnson while power chords drive the rhythm home. The songs never linger more than they need to and each second is there for a purpose.
“Falling in Love Again” comes from their third album, Never Hungover Again. The album runs just under twenty minutes in length but each song is crafted in such a focused way that the overall runtime feels larger in scope.
I think you're funny
I like your friends
I like the way they treat you
“Falling in Love Again” hooks us with a steady bass line introduction before the release of frenzied guitars and Johnson’s familiar vocal delivery. The lyrics take us through falling in love, again, and the song ends just under two and a half minutes later—the longest song on the record.
I've got some money
That we could spend
Not that you're like that
I'm falling in love again
