song: Joanna - by Zach Winters

there’s a paywall that’s up until midnight. I wanted to say an extra lil thanks to my paid subscribers—please enjoy an early listen to a song I’ve only ever sung at home, and mostly to my youngest daughter, Joanna… (Wednesday is her birthday)

LYRICS

Joanna,
oh I really love you girl
you’re such a sweet song in my mind
Joanna, whatever you need from me
I’ll be here walking right by your side

but if you’re alone
or if the raining makes you sad
don’t forget to
look where your eyes can’t see
And if the sun won’t shine
and if the music doesn’t rhyme
keep on singing—
you’re gonna find that harmony

Joanna,
oh I really love you girl
you’re such a sweet song in my mind
Joanna, some day you will leave from me
but don’t you know I’ll be right there when you call

if you’re alone
or if the raining makes you sad
don’t forget to look where your eyes can’t see
and if the sun won’t shine
and if the music doesn’t rhyme
keep on singing—
you’re gonna find that harmony

as a father whose kids sometimes listen to my music, I can’t help but thinking of their ears hearing my words and melodies—now and in the future... can’t think of it too much. I know there are things they won’t catch right now and that they might find in time… meanwhile, I’m setting tables and leaving breadcrumbs…

this song is simple. and mostly, I want it to land in her heart now—she already knows all the words. but I hope it can keep her company even when I’m gone…

her name means “gift/grace of God”, and she is.

a short poem re Joanna (from my poetry book)

11
an “I love you too”
from someone who can pronounce
precisely none of the words
is one of this world’s greatest gifts

hope you enjoy—would love to hear any thoughts, or where you’re listening/reading from.

if you’re just tuning in, glad you’re here. I post songs, poetry, musings on a creative life, and hopefully some encouragement along the way… I’m making my way through my new book of poetry Snowmelt to Roots (albeit slowly and incompletely)

peace,

Z
