Songs of Deliverance

Hi Pal,

Welcome to this edition of List of Ten, a newsletter where I mention ten things from any theme of my choice. The only common denominator is that it is something related to Christian music.

Taking the reins for today’s edition of List of Ten is Josephine ‘Dera. She is the writer of Bud & Blossom, a Newsletter that reflects on the Christian experience through accessible bible study and teachings.

Okay, bye for now.

Music is a tool that the Lord is using in many ways to transform my life. As I sojourn with Him and get exposed to His Word more and more, I find that this tool is one that He has given to mankind to be used for His glory.

Today, I bring to you ten (10) songs that focus on deliverance, a theme and reality of those who have received the gift of salvation through the New Birth. It is true that without the sacrifice of Christ, all of us will be stray kids; wandering and lost in the darkness of the enemy.

I hope that these songs help you draw near to God and reflect more on His saving power.

When Billy recommended this album to me in 2020, I was highly moved by Strahan’s vocals and how folky the album was. Here, Strahan sings about the gift of forgiveness given by a loving Father who has made him His child. There’s a constant line echoed throughout the song “You have made me a child of God” which attests to God’s adoption of every believer.

I found Mikayla in 2021, when the Lord was weaning me from secular music and after listening to her, I became nostalgic and fell in love. Mikayla has a unique voice and here, she sings about bearing witness to God’s love. The song is sung from two perspectives - a human’s and God’s - and together, narrates the testimony of one who has been forgiven and adopted.

Don and Lori Chaffer, the current members of Waterdeep, have been in the Christian alternative scene for more than two decades. With Lori’s powerful voice and a fine blend of sounds, the band delivers an outstanding rendition of Psalm 18, maintaining an attitude of thanksgiving possessed by the psalmist when God rescued him from his foes. Do find an excerpt from the song lyrics as follows:

I call to the Lord who is worthy of praise

And all my enemies don't know where to face

The cords of death have entangled my feet

I cried to You and from your temple

You heard me and you rescued me

This simple, piano ballad reminds us of the assurance of God’s safety in times of trouble. I particularly like how orchestral elements are incorporated within this track, and it sure is a good song that can be listened to at any moment, including sleep time.

Where Would I Be is a song that I resonate with deeply! With its name giving its details away, the brothers Cameron and Chandler Wood, sing passionately about a life lost without Christ. This song is rich sonically and has a nice mixture of string, percussion and synth elements that coalesce into the song’s tapestry.

From the album, All Ye Lepers

Joshua released his first full-length album All Ye Lepers last year and indeed, it is a work of art. As the second track on the album, THE GALLOWS speaks of the substitutionary work of Christ’s death with the repeated line “You hung on that tree to keep me from the gallows” emphasizing that we were bought with a price and redeemed from eternal damnation. Joshua does an excellent lyrical job and sonically with the electronic elements on this track.

This song is taken from the debut album of this indie-folk husband-and-wife duo. I am a big fan of guitars and the bassist in this track does not fail to impress me. As the song builds and gets to its 3:52 mark, an intro of acoustic strumming is heard with bass underlining that increases as Michelle repeats the line “cling to me, my soul is longing for you/at Your feet, I poured my love for You.” Micah brings in his harmonies at the third repeat with the drums that culminate in a sweet listening experience.

Hudson Taylor Jones is a musician I discovered in March last year and has been on my album waitlist ever since. With vocals accompanied by piano instrumentation, he sings about the assurance of God’s power to save and the decision to trust in Him.

This band is born out of a church with the same name based in Austin, Texas. Under Cover of Blood centres on the work of the blood of Jesus - how it sets believers apart for God and delivers people from bondage.

To close this list is a favourite song inspired by Psalm 143, written by David when his enemies sought to kill him. Matt interprets this psalm, telling its story in a beautiful manner that reflects the sentiments of its writer. With sweet electric guitar licks and soft piano played in harmony, the singer maintains a consistent, sober tempo that blends with the instruments to produce a heartfelt cry unto God for deliverance.
