The best true crime podcasts of 2023.

Howdy!

Whenever I need to drive a long distance or tackle a big cleaning or organisational task, I always put on a juicy true crime podcast — something with a full season available and plenty of plot twists — to distract me from the task at hand.

Plus, it’s always a bonus if you can solve a murder or two while you’re cleaning out your undie drawer.

Thankfully, 2023 has been a big year for true crime podcasts — particularly podcasts about scammers — so there’s plenty of podcasts to keep our minds busy while we complete mundane tasks for the rest of the year like wrapping Christmas presents etc etc.

Here are the best true crime podcasts of 2023:

In the summer of 1987, 30-year-old Susan Woods is living alone in her hometown of Stephenville, Texas, and piecing her life back together after separating from her husband. When Susan is brutally murdered, everyone in town believes only one man could be responsible: her husband.

But years later, DNA evidence will lead police to another man who was right under their nose the entire time. Stephenville tells the story of one small town that was hiding a huge secret.

Ghost Story has everything you could want in a true crime podcast — a haunting, a mysterious murder, and a cameo from a Hollywood actor.

British journalist Tristan Redman has always been a skeptic, despite seeing a ‘woman with no face’ in his childhood bedroom. But when he learns his wife’s great grandmother, Naomi Dancy, was murdered in the house next to his childhood home in 1937, Tristan begins to wonder whether there could be a connection between the murder and the ghost. Was the ghost of the faceless woman trying to tell him something all those years ago?

Full of unexpected twists, Ghost Story is a podcast about family secrets, fate, and facing the unfathomable.

When Carole Fisher first meets Bob Bierenbaum in the mid-90s, she thinks she’s stumbled across the only decent bachelor in Las Vegas. Bob’s a nice Jewish doctor who speaks five languages, pilots his own private jet, and is crazy about her.

But soon Carole starts to see Bob’s dark side. After they break up, Carole and some of Bob’s other ex-girlfriends band together to look into Bob’s mysterious past — like what happened to his first wife Gail Katz, who is missing, presumed dead?

In the nine-part podcast The Girlfriends, Carole walks us through what happened when the ex-girlfriends started digging into Bob’s past.

Brilliantly produced and surprisingly heartfelt, The Girlfriends is kind of like Dirty John meets The Shrink Next Door.
