The Razakar Atrocities-1 - by Ratnakar Sadasyula

The atrocities commited by the Razakars are so many, that it would actually take a book to fill that up. Here I am just looking at some of the more well known ones. For context, you can check out my post on Qasim Razvi here.

Bathukamma is one of the main festivals in Telangana that occurs during Devi Navratri, where women sing and dance in a circle around the floral representation of Devi. Women celebrating this at Wadi, a prominent railway junction now in Karnataka’s Gulbarga district, were stripped, beaten up and forced to do dance naked for the pleasure of the Razakars and the Nizam’s police.

The villagers of Talakat put up a strong resistance to the Razakars with sticks, sickles, axes and stones, however they were soon overpowered by their guns. The Razakars dragged out the village head, beheaded him, and hosting it on a spear, parades all over the village. The women were disrobed, homes burnt down, many were killed. Those who tried to flee were chased, dragged back and brutally killed.

Ameerpet village near Hyderabad was attacked by the Razakars, looted. They tortured the women, pulling out their ear and nose rings, hooting with glee, listening to their cries, after which they abducted them. In Punjagutta, that was predominantly populated by shepherds, they raped a women and daughter in front of her husband and children.

Radhakrishna a young merchant who was attempting to arouse the consciousness of Hindus against the Nizam was brutally murdered near Nizamabad. Veda Prakash an Arya Samaji in Gunjoti village of Latur dt, refused to convert to Islam inspite of being forced. The Razakars after Friday prayers, shouted slogans of “Kaafiron ko maar dalo”, looted the local markets, and stabbed Veda Prakash to death. Another Arya Samaji Dharma Prakash, who was involved in cultural activities and physical training of youth, was brutally stabbed to death.

Pandit Shyamlal, a well known Vedic scholar, was imprisoned in Bidar jail for no reason, tortured and poisoned by the prison officials. There were so many Satyagrahis like Swami Satyananda, Vishnu Nindalikar, Malkhan Singh who were arrested. A Dussehra procession in Humnabad, Bidar dt, was attacked by the Razakars with spears, swords, rifles, more than 100 injured, while Shivachandra, Lakshman, Narsimha Rao were stabbed to death.

The Razakars were aided in their atrocities by the Nizam’s police who were one corrupt bunch of thugs in uniform. The Razakars would usually attack villages during the nights, and the next day the police would come and book false cases, extort money from the better off villages. This is the eye witness statement of Allaudin , a Pathan officer who disgusted with the Razakar atrocities, recorded the following incident.

“I was transferred to Errupalem in Warangal dt, SI Chand Khan along with 25 police and 80 Razakars, pounced on the village. Every house including the huts were looted, women were assaulted , raped and killed before their own children. More than 70 were killed”.

The Nizam police ran a reign of terror, locking up anyone who dared to criticize the Nizam on false charges. Hindus were arrested for doing Yagnas, just following their own culture and traditions. Even when the Razakars attacked processions, it was the Hindus who were falsely charged and jailed. There was a popular Telugu song “Nizam sarkaroda, Naazila minchinoda” by Bandi Yadagiri, that translates to “Nizam Govt, worse than the Nazis” which rightly describes that dark era.
