The Tumultuous Rise and Fall of Fankaty Dabo
It wasn’t too long ago that Coventry City found themselves staring down the barrel of a penalty shoot-out in May of 2023. After a grueling Championship campaign, Coventry had battled their way to an impressive fifth place finish, guaranteeing them a playoff position with aspirations of the Premier League on the other side. This was an incredible feat in its own right, as Mark Robins took to the helm as manager of Coventry City and steadily steered Coventry towards the upper echelons of League One and the Championship, a position that Coventry fans had been hoping for amongst years of mediocrity and uncertainty as they were relegated to League Two under previous boss Tony Mowbray.
With Robins at the helm, Coventry pushed past Middlesbrough in the Playoff Semi-Finals, setting up a mouth-watering bout against opposing playoff hopefuls Luton Town. After 90 impassioned minutes from both sides and a hectic 30 minutes throughout extra time, both sides were now faced with the proposition of penalties.
All five of each team’s penalty kick takers dispatched with ease, leaving the 6th penalty to longtime Coventry City defender Fankaty Dabo. With his run up, and the hopes of all Coventry fans weighing on his shoulders, Fankaty Dabo would miss the penalty, leaving the door wide open for Luton and Dan Potts to shut the door on Coventry and seal promotion for themselves, which they did.

With celebrations amongst them, the hate towards Fankaty Dabo had already begun. Dabo was subjected to constant disgusting racial abuse in the mere moments and days following his crucial miss, turning a time that should have been dedicated to Dabo’s health and well-being into a discussion of how this loss fell upon him alone, purely because of his race. Throughout these heinous actions forwarded towards Dabo, he was also met with the news that he had been released by Coventry City, a devastating announcement given his consistent performances for the club as he aided in their rise throughout the EFL and back into contention for Premier League status.
This was, and still is, a disappointing conclusion to Fankaty Dabo’s tenure at Coventry City. No doubt a brilliant, loving, and caring man, Fankaty Dabo was subjected to a situation that nobody should have to go through and was further subjected to remarks that nobody should have to hear.
Dabo would go on in hope of a new opportunity, with Forest Green Rovers offering him a contract as they looked to return to League One at the first time of asking. These plans would not work out, however. Through 31 appearances and a full League Two season, Forest Green Rovers and Fankaty Dabo now find themselves relegated to the National League, the first step of non-league football in England. Now, with the National League beckoning and an uncertain future, the hope that Fankaty Dabo returns to glory may be drifting, but it is one that I will be holding on to dearly.
