Project 2025: Art is Porn

Oklahoma Christian Nationalist Republican state congressman Dusty Deevers has given us an (in)decent list. His “pornography” ban, Oklahoma Senate Bill 1976, defines the following as “obscene”:

“Sexual conduct” means and includes any of the following:

a. acts of sexual intercourse including any intercourse which is normal or perverted, actual or simulated,

b. acts of deviate sexual conduct, including oral and anal sodomy,

c. acts of masturbation,

d. acts of sadomasochistic abuse including but not limited to:

(1) flagellation or torture by or upon any person who is nude or clad in undergarments or in a costume which is of a revealing nature, or

(2) the condition of being fettered, bound, or otherwise physically restrained on the part of one who is nude or so clothed,

e. acts of excretion in a sexual context, or

f. acts of exhibiting human genitals or pubic areas.

Any intercourse with is normal or perverted, actual or simulated - To Christian Nationalists, the only “normal” intercourse happens between one man married to one unrelated woman for the purpose of procreation. AND EVEN THIS IS FORBIDDEN TO BE SHOWN, DESCRIBED, WRITTEN, ACTED, PLOTTED, ALLUDED TO, OR SIMILAR. All depictions of intercourse would be labeled “porn,” even if simulated. Even if the participants were clothed. Even if viewers couldn’t see any naughty bits. Intercourse is “porn.” Period.

Oral or anal sodomy - Christian Nationalists do not believe sexual stimulation should be solely for pleasure. Nor do they endorse same-sex sex. Hence, films, stories, or images of a woman’s head going south on a man, even if incomplete, would violate this section. I don’t need to explain the rest.

Masturbation - Because Christian Nationalists believe one is never, ever, ever, ever, ever supposed to get themselves off. Images, films, books, and more that include references to masturbation encourage people to pleasure themselves without the danger of pregnancy. They would also classify masturbation as “deviate sexual conduct.”

Sadomasochistic abuse - The bill includes the phrase “of a revealing nature” to classify every conceivable iteration of this activity as porn. Nobody is supposed to enjoy S&M. Ever ever ever. Unless a Christian Nationalist spanks his wife when she refuses to submit to him.

Acts of excretion - This isn’t merely 45’s purported love of golden showers or seeing someone ejaculate. It also includes references to bodily fluids. For example, let’s mine my love of smut romance novels. If a guy touches a woman and asks her Did I make you so wet?, this bill would make that dialogue pornographic. Especially since those scenes always happen between people who are not married.

Acts of exhibiting human genitals or pubic areas - Even partially. Or via transparent or see-through clothing. Or using clothing to draw attention to those areas, especially on female bodies.

Sex and the Christian Nationalist

This would apply to sung lyrics where people moan to simulate sexual pleasure or orgasm. Basically, articles like this are porn. Every song they reference is porn.

It would apply to films where orgasms are simulated while the actors are fully clothed. And to the entirety of one of my favorite recent reads, Robinne Lee’s The Idea of You, AND to this scene from the film. (I can’t find an exact image online, but it happens after Anne Hathaway reveals herself this dress.)
