What is the difference between Defect and Defective?

1 Article for the Week:

There are many professionals (including Quality Function) who do not know the difference between Defects and Defectives.

Defect: The issues / problems (out of specification) found in the product. E.g. If you manufacture Shirts, the issues may be Wrong Stitching, Button Missing, Wrong Thread, etc. These are called Defects.

Defective: Because of these defects, the product becomes a Defective Product. In this case, the shirt is a Defective shirt.

A Defective Product may have 1 or more Defects. The same shirt may have Wrong Stitching, Button missing and improper ironing.

During Inspection, when a defect is identified, the inspector may immediately classify this product as a Defective. However, in many cases, there may be many defects in the products which may go unnoticed. All the analysis and CAPA depends on this data.

Which one you are measuring? Defects or Defectives? Please share your thoughts in comments.

One More Thing: We have opened our “Centre for Lean Manufacturing” to specifically train employees on Lean Manufacturing concepts. Our 1st Program is on 3rd April (Wednesday) on How to Reduce the Changeover Time by 50%. More details are provided in this form. click here to register.
