What's the opposite of dark fantasy?
Today I launched the campaign for Nexalis, my solo/coop bright fantasy RPG about exploration, growth and camaraderie.
I had a vision for what kind of tone this game should have, but I couldn’t quite name it. And although I don’t believe in clear boundaries between genres, I felt I needed a way to quickly communicate what I was talking about.
So I stumbled upon the term bright fantasy, and decided to adopt it. I had planned a Twitter thread explaining my decision, but the prospect of the “lol your dumb” kind of replies prevented me from doing so. Since this seems to be a more amicable platform, I’ll leave it here for you:
The obvious answer would be 'classic fantasy', but that didn't feel enough for me to convey what I was looking for with Nexalis.
I aimed for a colorful, vibrant, and more optimistic view of the tropes of the fantasy genre.
It is not a world devoid of conflict and violence. But I wanted to make sure it was not portrayed as gritty and gloom as what we normally find in dark fantasy, and even increasingly more regularly in "standard classic fantasy".
That is why I call Nexalis a 'bright fantasy' RPG.
My first question was, "Does it already exist as a genre?"
The only thing I could find was a reddit thread asking the same thing. So the sentiment is out there. It is not necessarily light or comedic, but you're allowed to feel good, not broody or miserable all the time.
Bright fantasy, as opposed to dark fantasy, focuses on themes of hope, wonder, exploration, and camaraderie. It showcases a vibrant and diverse setting, filled with colorful landscapes and imaginative creatures. Stories tend to be character-driven, often revolving around personal growth, discovery, and the building of relationships.
Here are some of the key elements that, *for me*, define bright fantasy:
Bright fantasy tends to maintain an overall positive and hopeful tone, even in the face of adversity.
There's conflict, struggle and fight, but the narrative often emphasizes the potential for good in people and the world. You can trust people for a change!
The settings in bright fantasy are often characterized by their rich and vibrant environments, filled with diverse cultures, magical creatures, and awe-inspiring landmarks.
Joy, celebration and enchantment are ever-present.
Exploration and adventure with a sense of wonder are common themes.
Quests don't need to be epic or world-shattering.
The protagonists often embark on journeys to help others, uncovering hidden wonders, and learning about themselves along the way.
Relationships between characters, often marked by companionship, mutual respect, and trust, are at the heart of its stories.
Characters often work together to overcome challenges, fostering a sense of community and cooperation.
Characters in bright fantasy often exhibit heroic qualities, making sacrifices for the greater good, and growing personally through their experiences.
They are certainly not perfect, but they often choose to do the right thing.
Magic is typically portrayed in a positive or neutral light, contributing to the sense of wonder and excitement.
It's often tied to the natural world or spiritual elements, enhancing the world's mystique rather than presenting it as a threat.
While bright fantasy can deal with serious themes and include conflict, violence or serious threats, it tends to do so in a way that ultimately reinforces its optimistic outlook, emphasizing resilience, resourcefulness, and the power of community in overcoming adversity.
I hope Nexalis can portray a less cynical perspective to a fantasy setting, while keeping it evocative and memorable.
