What the Flerken? Captain Marvels Pet

The first Captain Marvel film introduced us to Goose (called Chewie in the comic books). The recently released Marvels film appears to be delivering a few more Flerkens. Whether it is in the comics or the movies, Flerkens are a little more than cute.

First of all, what is a Flerken? In both comics and movies, a Flerken is a rare alien that has the appearance of a cat, but actually contains a pocket universe. In the first Captain Marvel movie, Goose held onto the Tesseract and delivered it to Nick Fury in the end credits scene. The Flerken uses mouth tentacles to draw objects of varying sizes (it can consume objects as big as people) and store them in its pocket dimension.

In the comics, Captain Marvel has already encountered a invasion of Flerkens. The Flerkens appear to be a stampede of cats running through New York. Captain Marvel quickly investigates. As you can imagine, she is somewhat surprised to see more of the creatures she considered to be very rare.

Captain Marvel manages to distract most of the Flerkens, but she is not watching her back and a Flerken pulls her into its pocket dimension. Initially floating aimlessly through the Flerken’s pocket dimension, Captain Marvel manages to escape by following the tentacles and generally making herself an unpleasant visitor to the Flerken’s pocket dimension. It is an interesting event because it suggests that a Flerken responds to what it happening in its pocket dimension.

When Captain Marvel is ejected from the pocket dimension she finds herself in a space station full of Flerkens who appear to be organising invasions across the universe. Except, the motivating force behind the Flerkens is the Kree. You know the Kree, they are they race of technologically advanced warriors determined to conquer the universe. They are also the original source of Captain Marvel’s power and the force that Captain Marvel is determined to defeat.

Talking with the supreme intelligence of the Kree, Captain Marvel is told that the Kree plan to introduce Flerkens to every planet and on a Kree command, the Flerken will pull all of the beings into their pocket dimensions. With every planet empty of inhabitants, the Kree will then be free to take over the universe.

Thankfully, Captain Marvel gets a little help from her best friend Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman who brings Captain Marvel’s pet Flerken and the Guardians of the Galaxy. While the Guardians of the Galaxy hold off the army of Flerkens (no easy task), Captain Marvel and Spider-Woman disable the technology used by the Kree to control the Flerkens.

The story gives us some useful insights into Flerkens. In addition to the pocket dimensions of Flerkens, it also appears that Flerkens can use their pocket dimensions to travel through space.

Flerkens are also able to organise and run a society. In the comic they are given cute uniforms. And they are intelligent. Captain Marvel warns the Kree away from making another attempt at controlling the Flerkens by suggesting they have a long memory.

Flerken are a distinctive species but also frightening. The combination of being adorable and having intergalactic powers is a strange and terrifying mixture.

If you are interesting in seeing more adorable aliens, they will be appearing in the Marvels film.
