WING REVIEW: Prohibition 2020 - Patrick Moran

Prohibition 2020 is located in Orchard Park, almost directly next door to Highmark Stadium. There’s stiff competition in this immediate area with good wing spots between O’Neill’s and Big Tree. I’ve had wings there under previous regimes (Biergarten & Tailgaters among others) and quite frankly thought they kinda sucked. Did Prohibition suffer the same fate? Do they hold up well against nearby competition? Let’s find out.

PROS: I was with a handful of friends and we ended up getting five flavors.  I’ll note these reviews are based primarily on traditional wings (hot or medium) above all else and not a contest of what spots have the most flavors, but a large variety doesn’t hurt either.  I tried traditional hot, Beef on Weck, Chiavettas, Lemon Pepper and Loganberry BBQ wings.   The hto wings were pretty damn good as were the Chiavettas and Lemon Pepper. Plentiful in size, sauced well and crispy enough without tasting dry and crunchy. The pricing is extremely fair too (20 wings for $21) and that doesn’t count the ridiculously cheap wing special they have every Monday.

CONS: Neither the traditional nor any signature flavors completely wowed me. I didn’t dislike any style we had but wasn’t through the moon excited about any either.

OUTLOOK: There’s zero wrong with Prohibition. It’s a big-time party spot with great drink/food specials and fun to be had almost any day/night of the week, especially when the Bills are playing. The wings are pretty damn good too --- they’re just not on the level of the elite wing spots in WNY, which is fine. If you’re going to the bar to enjoy a few cold ones and wings, you won’t go wrong hitting up Prohibition 2020.  Just don’t expect more than what they are—a solid, serviceable wing that goes perfectly fine with a few pints. To answer the previous question at the top, I think there as good or better than Big Tree and right there with O’Neill’s. TIER RANKING: “Solid Starter”

Here’s my seven tiers with a brief explanation of each.

Mt. Rushmore: The four undisputed championship wing spots of Western New York.
The Elite: The next best thing—right on the brink of being immortalized.
All-Pro: Perhaps not MVP material but categorically deserving of being discussed among the best.
Solid Starter: You certainly won’t be complaining. Exactly what the description reads—solid.
Depth Chart: You can do far worse but at this point — significantly better as well.
Roster Bubble: If left with few other options these places may suffice, but I can’t recommend them.
Waiver Wire: I’d rather eat pizza or something else.

(Note: I’ve done a lot of wing reviews over the past few years, most of which appeared on my former blog. Now that I’ve started my own Substack, I’m transferring several here. Some reviews are quite dated but my takes are mostly still the same. A portion of these are copied from the old blog along with a few newer thoughts, especially if I’ve had em’ again since the original review.)
